Why Small Triggers Feel So Big
Neuroscience explains it clearly. When the brain is under stress, the amygdala—the primitive alarm system—fires rapidly, while the prefrontal cortex, responsible for reasoning and self-control, goes offline. This is called an amygdala override (Arnsten, 2009).
For people with ADHD or high impulsivity, this override happens more easily. Executive functions like inhibitory control and emotional regulation are weaker (Barkley, 2015). That’s why Jordan’s brain treated a harmless question as if it were an attack.
The Science of Overload
Research backs this up:
- 70% of adults with ADHD report severe difficulties with emotional regulation (Nigg, 2020).
- Everyday stressors, like interruptions or time pressure, activate the body’s sympathetic nervous system, flooding it with cortisol and adrenaline (American Psychological Association, 2018).
- Studies show people under cognitive overload are more likely to interpret neutral events as hostile (Beck & Fernandez, 1998).
Put simply: when your brain is maxed out, even small bumps feel like earthquakes.
